Author: admin
Subject: I Don't Get It
Posted: 05 Jul 2008 at 3:03pm

I feel it is time to weigh in on this subject...

First of all, it must be noted that Mark NEVER at any point EVER said he was retiring from racing. In fact, when we formulated the "Salute To You" Tour concept, it was a very large part of the process that we did not in any way use the word 'Retire' or 'Farewell" or "Last" or any other word, because Mark was very clear that we WAS NOT quitting racing. What he was going to do was to step back.

You guys have to understand that many of the decisions were practically made for Mark and we went with what he had at the time. Mark always entertained the 'part time' Cup idea, but was told by the people he worked for that it was not really feasable. The plan was to then race a truck full-time, but that never really materialized either.

Mark in the end agreed to drive one more year in Cup and that allowed enough time for Jay Frye to present the 'part time' thing to Mark. That was only after Mark asked to do it at Roush and was turned down.

Back to the "Salute" to deal for a second. That program was a way for Mark to say thanks to everyone who had made all this possible for him. It was not a way to say goodbye and a challenge anyone to find a place where we said it was.

It kind of cracks me up that fans get mad at him for number changes and other stuff. Think about it. Even when he drove the No. 6 car, did the colors not change regulaly? The number font? The Sponsor? Even then those did not change, the paint schems would almost every year? Why do you think that is? Mark would not need to have any type of tour to move merchandise. He was a top-five seller then and is close now.

Back to the other. He raced the part time deal and he liked it. Last year was a tough year in the end with the merger and everything that went on. This year has been much better and so what if Mark has decided he has a little more in the tank and wants to make a run at it? He's proven he can still get it done, and quite honestly needs no person's permission to do so. If you don't want to buy a new t-shirt, then don't. I don't recall a part in the press conference where he asked you to.

I for one and glad to see him go for it. For no other reason than it is what he want to do and he has earned that right to do so - with our without mine or anyone else's blessings.

He said he was retiring from CUP racing. He had plans to go into truck racing and perhaps Nationwide. When he came back for a year to help out his good friend Jack Roush the truck and Nationwide opportunities disappeared. In 2007 he would have had no choice but to retire if the deal with Ginn had not materialized, which gave him the part time schedule that he wanted. And as some one else pointed out, Mark said he was not ruling out coming back full time at some point. Some may remember Mark saying that he had learned to "never say never."
